Artist/Engineer Creates Wild Self-Propelled “Animals” to Wander the Beaches of the Netherlands

Inspiration through brilliant engineering…by Ryan Ulbrich

Recycled plastic bottles, winds on a coastline, and the basic laws of geometry and physics. Strandbeest is a project 30 years in the making, and artist Theo Jansen intends to “put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they live their own lives.” Right now, they wander Jansens’ studio on the shores of the Netherlands, just west of The Hague. On his site, the artist describes the structure and mathematics of the wind storage and leg forms. A new form of life among us!
